US Lawmakers Push Pause on AI Data Center Construction Amid Energy and Environmental Concerns

Democratic lawmakers in the US have introduced legislation to impose a federal pause on AI data center construction. The Artificial Intelligence Data Center Moratorium Act, sponsored by Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, would freeze new development until Congress establishes safeguards addressing rising utility prices, environmental strain, and lopsided economic benefits.

The bill aims to address concerns about electricity demand, water consumption, and the fact that local communities often absorb the costs of hosting these massive facilities without seeing proportional economic returns. The legislation specifically flags issues with AI data centers competing for grid capacity with Bitcoin miners, who have flexible power loads that can throttle up or down based on grid conditions.

New York's state legislature has already passed a one-year moratorium on large data centers exceeding 20 megawatts of power capacity in early June 2026. Similar efforts are taking shape elsewhere, including Seattle and parts of Wisconsin, where local governments are pushing back against the environmental and infrastructural strain caused by AI and crypto operations.

Crypto investors should pay attention to state-level moratorium votes, as lawmakers may decide that energy-intensive computing facilities, including those for Bitcoin mining, are broadly problematic.
