Crypto Sponsors Flood World Cup as Austria Secures Convincing Win
Austria kicked off their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign on June 17 with a convincing 3-1 victory over Jordan at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Romano Schmid and an own goal from Jordan's Yazan Alarab gave the Europeans control of the Group J contest, while Marko Arnautovic sealed the win with a stoppage-time penalty.
The match saw Austria take the lead early on through Schmid, before Alarab's unfortunate own goal extended their advantage. Jordan did manage to find the back of the net courtesy of Ali Olwan, who scored what is now Jordan's first-ever World Cup goal.
In related news, the FIFA World Cup 2026 has welcomed several crypto sponsors, including Kraken, which was named the Official Crypto Exchange Supporter on June 9. The exchange is targeting fans in North America and Europe through various initiatives.
Chiliz (CHZ) and Chainlink (LINK) have also been highlighted for their partnerships with FIFA. Chiliz powers fan token ecosystems that allow supporters to buy governance-adjacent tokens tied to their favorite teams, while Chainlink provides decentralized oracle infrastructure for a range of applications, including tokenized ticketing and real-time data feeds.
A Solana-based token named after Arnautovic has also entered circulation, boasting a supply near 1 billion tokens. While this may not bode well for scarcity-driven value, Chiliz is poised to benefit from increased fan engagement due to its focus on sports tokenization.
