North Korea-Linked Developer Spent Month Accessing Sensitive Crypto Wallet Code

The blockchain firm Consensys, behind the popular MetaMask crypto wallet, has admitted to hiring a software developer linked to North Korea. The developer, using the alias Tyler Knapp and GitHub handle imyugioh, was brought into Consensys through a third-party service provider with which they had an existing relationship.

This introduction bypassed the standard vetting process applied to direct hires, allowing the North Korean-linked developer to spend about one month contributing to core MetaMask code. They worked on crypto-to-fiat conversion components during this time.

Consensys halted all MetaMask releases after discovering the North Korea threat and removed the compromised developer from their team. This security failure has raised concerns about wallet trust, adoption, and potential regulatory scrutiny across the crypto and DeFi spaces.
