New Hampshire Senate Passes Bill to Combat Cryptocurrency ATM Scams
The New Hampshire Senate has taken a significant step towards combating cryptocurrency ATM scams with the passage of a new bill. According to reports, these scams have resulted in over $22 million in losses for Granite Staters, with many elderly residents falling victim due to fear tactics employed by scammers.
The bill aims to provide greater protection for users of cryptocurrency ATMs by implementing measures such as a 48-hour hold on the first deposit, daily limits, and a refund window of 14 days. This will allow victims to cancel transactions and seek refunds more easily, while also holding operators accountable for their role in facilitating scams.
The bill's passage is seen as a significant development in the fight against cryptocurrency scams, which have become increasingly prevalent nationwide. Other states, such as Massachusetts, have taken similar action by suing large ATM operators for allegedly allowing scammers to use their machines to steal from users. The New Hampshire bill is notable for its emphasis on speed and efficiency in facilitating refunds, with a 14-day window being significantly shorter than the 90 days offered by some other states.
