BitMEX Exchange Set for Shutdown in September 2026 Amid Strategic Review
BitMEX announced that it will shut down its exchange on September 23, 2026, marking the end of an 11-year run as one of the most influential derivatives platforms in crypto. The decision comes after a strategic review of the business by HDR Global Trading Limited, the owner and operator of BitMEX.
The company will continue to operate normally until August 26, when it will stop users from opening new positions, allowing only position reductions. From August 26 to September 23, BitMEX will force close existing positions to wind down the market in an orderly way. Any positions still open at closure will be forced closed immediately.
BitMEX is urging all users to close open positions and withdraw funds as soon as possible, warning that those who fail to do so by September 23 will face a monthly account fee of $50 or 1% per annum, whichever is greater. The company also cautioned against phishing attempts exploiting the closure news, noting that no expedited or priority withdrawal service exists.
