Aave DeFi Platform Experiences Catastrophic $50M Execution Loss
A recent incident on the Aave decentralized platform has raised concerns about the reliability of DeFi infrastructure. On March 12, a trader exchanged $50.4 million in tokens for approximately $36,000 worth of AAVE through CoW Swap, a decentralized exchange embedded within Aave's user interface.
The transaction, which occurred despite explicit warnings from the platform, resulted in a $50 million execution loss. Investigations by both organizations revealed significant discrepancies in their explanations for the disaster, with Aave pointing to market liquidity issues and CoW Swap identifying infrastructure breakdowns as the primary causes.
According to CoW Swap's analysis, the transaction was executed through an outdated gas limit of 12 million units, which blocked superior trading quotes from being processed. This allowed a weaker solver option to establish the order's price boundary, leading to a significantly inferior outcome.
