St Maarten court clears MP Rolando Brison of crypto bribery charges

A court in St. Maarten has delivered a significant blow to the prosecution's case against former Member of Parliament (MP) Rolando Brison, clearing him and two others of crypto bribery charges.

The Court of First Instance made it clear that the prosecution had failed to provide sufficient evidence linking large sums of money transferred through digital wallets to corrupt activities. According to the judgment, the transactions could be explained by legitimate cryptocurrency exchanges.

In its ruling, the court emphasized that a plausible alternative explanation exists and cannot be disproven beyond reasonable doubt, which is a fundamental principle of criminal law. The Court found that the defense's scenario had not been refuted, as evidence showed Brison had been actively involved in cryptocurrency trading and promotion over an extended period.
