Japan Sets Sights on First Spot Bitcoin ETF Approval by 2028
Japan is poised to approve its first spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) by 2028, according to reports. This development comes after a landmark bill was enacted on July 15 that legally classifies cryptocurrencies as financial products, marking a significant shift in the country's regulatory approach.
The legislation redefines cryptocurrencies under Japan's financial regulatory framework and has prompted the Financial Services Agency to revise rules related to investment trusts. This revision is crucial for allowing asset managers to launch spot Bitcoin ETFs, which would track the price of Bitcoin directly rather than through futures contracts.
Major Japanese asset managers are reviewing potential ETF launches, with some industry projections suggesting that Japanese Bitcoin ETFs could attract up to 3 trillion yen (approximately $20.3 billion) by the end of fiscal 2028 in March 2029.
