Bolivia Eyes USDT Integration for National Payment System Expansion
Bolivia's government is exploring the integration of Tether (USDT) into its national payment system, which would make it the first country in Latin America to formally recognize the stablecoin within its infrastructure.
The proposal aims to strengthen financial flexibility and improve cross-border payments by allowing USDT to be used alongside the Bolivian boliviano and the US dollar for everyday transactions.
Economy and Public Finance Minister José Gabriel Espinoza stated that this initiative builds on Bolivia's decision to lift cryptocurrency restrictions in 2024, but regulations are still being developed before nationwide implementation can occur.
