Bitcoin ETF Performance Lags Behind Gold as Strategist Warns of Peak Cycle
A recent analysis by Bloomberg Intelligence has shed light on the cryptocurrency market, highlighting the performance of Bitcoin ETFs against gold. The study suggests that the launch of US spot Bitcoin ETFs in January 2024 may have represented a 'sell the news' moment, potentially indicating a cyclical top for crypto prices.
The analysis, led by senior macro strategist Mike McGlone, compared the performance of Bitcoin and gold from January 11 to April 8, 2024. During this period, gold surged by approximately 135%, outperforming both Bitcoin and major equity indices. In contrast, Bitcoin's price appreciated by around 50% over the same timeframe.
The study notes that the launch of spot Bitcoin ETFs fundamentally altered market mechanics, creating a new channel for institutional money flow. However, this also led to a short-term saturation point for new capital, which may have contributed to gold's outperformance.
