Roubini's Tokenized ETF: A Regulated On-Ramp for Crypto Investors
Nouriel Roubini, the economist known for his skepticism towards cryptocurrencies, has launched a blockchain-based token called USAF+. This token is fully collateralized by the Atlas America Fund ETF (USAF), which trades on Nasdaq. The permissionless nature of USAF+ allows it to be accessible to anyone with a compatible wallet.
Roubini's pivot from critic to advocate for tokenization represents a significant shift in the financial industry. His team at Atlas Capital Team had been exploring the intersection of traditional assets and fintech innovations since 2023, including climate-related tokens. The USAF+ token is the culmination of this trajectory, taking a regulated ETF and wrapping it in a tokenized structure that can operate outside traditional market hours.
The token's value is tied to the performance of the Atlas America Fund ETF, which bundles US Treasury bonds, gold, real estate investment trusts, and food commodities. This allows crypto-native investors to access a diversified, institutional-grade portfolio through a single token. However, there are risks associated with this new product, including smart contract risk and regulatory uncertainty.
