Tennessee County Data Center Ban Faces Constitutional Challenge
The town of Bulls Gap in Hawkins County, Tennessee has become the latest battleground in the debate over cryptocurrency mining and data centers. The Beacon Center of Tennessee, a conservative think tank, has filed a federal lawsuit against the county on behalf of ExoticRidge, a Kentucky-based company that wants to build an eight-megawatt bitcoin mine in the area.
The lawsuit claims that Hawkins County's ban on data centers and cryptocurrency mines is unconstitutional under the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution. The amendment guarantees equal protection under the law for all individuals and businesses, regardless of their industry or type of operation.
ExoticRidge has stated that it will generate its own electricity using on-site generators and take steps to mitigate noise pollution from the mine. However, local residents have expressed concerns about the potential impact on energy rates and quality of life in the area.
