Canada Government Officials Scam Warning Issued by Salmon Arm RCMP

The Salmon Arm RCMP has issued a warning about a sophisticated cryptocurrency scam targeting British Columbians.

According to the police, scammers are posing as Government of Canada officials and contacting victims by phone or email. They claim to have evidence of identity theft or other crimes and demand that the victim prove their identity by opening a cryptocurrency wallet and depositing cash into a Bitcoin ATM.

The RCMP reports that one victim lost $11,900 after following the scammer's instructions. Another victim received an email with a government letterhead instructing him to verify his identity using 'blockchain technology.'

Constable Andrew Hodges of the Salmon Arm RCMP advises the public to be cautious of unsolicited communications requesting money or personal information. 'A general rule of thumb is if you receive unsolicited phone calls, text messages, or emails from anyone requesting money, personal information, or asking you to sign into any sort of account, it should be treated as a scam,' he said.

The RCMP recommends contacting local police before taking any action and provides resources for more information on scams at the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre website and the B.C. RCMP's fraud page.
