Shipping Costs Spike to Two-Year High, Warning Signs for Crypto Markets

The cost of shipping a container across the ocean has hit its highest level since 2022, according to Drewry Shipping Consultants. The World Container Index jumped to $4,530 for a 40-foot container, a 9% increase from just last week.

This spike in shipping costs is attributed to higher fuel prices, port congestion, peak season demand, and carriers actively managing capacity through blank sailings, essentially canceling scheduled voyages to keep supply tight. Carriers are also implementing General Rate Increases and Peak Season Surcharges.

The current reading of $4,530 is still below the pandemic-era peak of $10,377 recorded in September 2021. However, this increase has significant implications for crypto markets, which tend to perform poorly during periods of high inflation and tight financial conditions.
