According to Circle, the introduction of quantum-resistant signatures will be optional initially, with a phased rollout planned for later stages. The company emphasizes that 'quantum resilience cannot live only in research papers, exploratory pilots, or distant roadmap slides,' underscoring the need for practical deployment challenges.
The timing of this announcement coincides with renewed warnings from Google and researchers at Caltech, who suggest that usable quantum systems may arrive sooner than earlier estimates suggested. In a worst-case scenario, advanced quantum conditions could potentially break Bitcoin's cryptographic protections within minutes. To mitigate these risks, Circle is planning to extend its quantum security model to protect transaction data, balances, and other sensitive information in the long term.
