Trump Signs Executive Orders to Boost Quantum Computing Research

President Donald Trump has signed two executive orders to accelerate US quantum computing development and prepare federal agencies for potential security risks posed by future quantum machines.

The measures aim to strengthen American leadership in quantum technologies, a field critical for future advances in computing, communications, and cybersecurity. Speaking during the signing event, Trump said 'quantum technologies represents the next generation of innovation across computing, sensing, and networking.'

The first order establishes the Quantum Computer for Application Development and Discovery Science (QC-ADDS) initiative, which requires the Department of Energy to identify technical requirements for an advanced quantum computer within 90 days. The Department of Commerce is also tasked with exploring ways to encourage private-sector participation in quantum computing.

Concerns persist over 'Q-Day,' the point at which quantum computers become capable of breaking encryption systems that currently secure financial networks, government infrastructure, and blockchain wallets. Policymakers and cryptography experts have called for preparations to begin before the technology reaches this stage.
