Galaxy Digital Prepares for Quantum Threats with $5M Fund for Bitcoin Security

Galaxy Digital has set aside $5 million to fund research into quantum-resistant security solutions for Bitcoin. The company's Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative aims to prepare the network for potential future threats from quantum computing.

The initiative will support developers working on new signature schemes, wallet migration tools, and security audits for Bitcoin. Galaxy Digital notes that upgrading the network's cryptography could take years of coordination across the ecosystem.

In anticipation of a possible transition to post-quantum cryptography, researchers estimate that around 6.9 million Bitcoin could become exposed if sufficiently powerful quantum computers were able to crack existing cryptographic protections. This would put around $461 billion worth of holdings at risk.
