BitMEX Announces Shutdown of Operations After 11 Years
BitMEX, a leading crypto derivatives exchange, will cease operations on September 23, 2026. The decision to shut down was made after a strategic review of its business and the digital asset industry by HDR Global Trading Limited, the parent company.
The exchange has been in operation for over 11 years and has become one of the most well-known derivatives platforms in the industry. BitMEX invented the 100x leverage perpetual swap, a product that is now widely adopted by exchanges and traders.
Trading will continue until the shutdown process advances, but new restrictions will begin on August 26. From then on, traders will only be able to reduce existing positions, with no new positions allowed.
Users who fail to withdraw their funds before the closure deadline may face ongoing custody charges of at least $50 or 1% annually, billed monthly, with the possibility of higher fees in the future after prior notice.
