Russia Sanctions 17-Year-Old British Teen for Exposing Cryptocurrency Network
A 17-year-old British teenager has been sanctioned by Russia in an unprecedented move that has raised concerns about censorship and freedom of expression.
The sanctions were imposed on Alexander Browder after a report linked to him revealed how the rouble-backed A7A5 cryptocurrency was used to launder funds and evade sanctions, allegedly financing the war in Ukraine.
Browder's father, Sir Bill Browder, is a well-known human rights activist who has been banned from entering Russia since 2005. Alexander Browder co-founded Hermitage Capital Management with his father.
The Henry Jackson Society think-tank published the report in March, which sparked the Russian government's response. The report allegedly exposed a complex web of cryptocurrency transactions used to evade sanctions and launder funds.
