Stablecoins Set to Power Agentic Machine Transactions

Analysts from Bernstein have identified a potential future trend in agentic machine payments, where software or autonomous devices handle transactions entirely.

The team led by Gautam Chhugani notes that these transactions are becoming increasingly prevalent and could be driven by stablecoins, which offer a range of benefits for this type of environment. Stablecoins are programmable, allowing payment logic to be directly embedded within the currency, and they can facilitate microtransactions with high-throughput blockchains and state channels.

One key advantage of stablecoins in agentic machine payments is their speed, as transfers can be settled in seconds, enabling AI agents to pay for compute or data in real-time. This financial efficiency is also enhanced by the elimination of borderless payment barriers such as SWIFT, correspondent banking, and FX conversion.

Several companies have begun developing infrastructure to operationalize these capabilities, including Coinbase's x402 agent payments protocol and Circle's nano-payment infrastructure for agents. Additionally, Stripe has launched the Machine Payments Protocol on the Tempo blockchain, which has already seen some traction with $5,000 in volume in its first week of launch.
