Bitcoin Depot Sued Over Alleged Failure to Protect Scam Victims
A class action lawsuit has been filed in Idaho federal court against Bitcoin Depot, a company that operates cryptocurrency Automated Teller Machines (ATMs).
The plaintiffs, Karen and Robert Lacey, claim that they deposited $76,000 into various Bitcoin Depot ATMs after being scammed by individuals who claimed to be from the FBI. The scammers allegedly told the Laceys that their bank accounts were tied to illegal activity.
After filing a federal crime complaint, the Laceys reportedly received only two $1,000 refund checks from Bitcoin Depot, which did not cover the associated fees.
The lawsuit alleges that Bitcoin Depot failed to protect and reimburse the plaintiffs for their losses. The company has recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy due to regulatory and business challenges.
