TON Blockchain Upgrades Gain Momentum Amid Intensifying Competition
The Telegram-backed blockchain, TON, has taken significant strides towards becoming a major player in the decentralized finance (DeFi) space. As part of its Make TON Great Again (MTONGA) framework, TON has successfully implemented an upgrade called Catchain 2.0. This update has led to a tenfold increase in speed and plans are now in place to lower fees by six times.
According to Pavel Durov, founder of Telegram and key figure behind the TON blockchain, this is just the first step towards achieving the project's ambitious goals. The upgrade has placed TON among the fastest blockchain networks, rivalling Solana and BNB Chain in terms of block creation speed.
The real test for TON lies ahead as it aims to attract new users seeking faster and cheaper transactions. With a current average transfer cost of $0.00315, TON still lags behind Solana's $0.00201 per transaction. However, if the planned sixfold reduction in fees materializes, TON could potentially become 3.5 times cheaper than Solana.
TON has been steadily improving its standing among blockchain networks despite experiencing a broader downtrend in activity since late 2024. Its stablecoin liquidity ranks 13th globally, with TVL (total locked value) decreasing from a record high of $766M to $55M.
