Tether Launches Grants Program to Foster Open-Source Payments and AI Tools
Tether has announced the launch of a grants program designed to foster innovation in open-source payments and AI tools. The program will provide funding for projects that align with Tether's goals, including the development of local-first AI systems and decentralized payment infrastructure.
The grants are task-based, meaning developers can receive fixed payouts between $1,500 and $4,000 for specific technical milestones. Payments can be made in USDT or Bitcoin, offering flexibility for developers to choose their preferred currency.
Tether's CEO, Paolo Ardoino, emphasized the need for a different approach to funding open-source development. He stated that traditional models often impose structural trade-offs on developers, relying on centralized intermediaries or business models that incentivize data collection and reuse.
The grants program will focus on four key areas: QVAC, an on-device AI platform; Wallet Development Kit, a tool for embedding self-custodial wallets into apps; MDK, targeting Bitcoin mining infrastructure; and Pears, supporting peer-to-peer networking. Additional funding will be allocated to documentation, research into edge AI and cryptography, and tooling for open standards.
