Vitalik Buterin Unveils Ambitious Lean Ethereum Upgrade Plan
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has outlined plans for a major overhaul of the Ethereum network, dubbed 'Lean Ethereum.' The multi-year project will replace nearly every major component of the protocol and is expected to take three to four years to complete.
The roadmap includes seven upgrades through 2029, with a focus on improving quantum safety and privacy. Buterin emphasized that quantum safety has become a top priority, citing the potential threat from future quantum computers that could break today's blockchain cryptography.
Another key aspect of Lean Ethereum is the introduction of a new data storage tier, which could reduce transaction fees by over 10 times for most tokens and DeFi applications. However, complex apps like Uniswap will likely remain on the existing system.
Critics have expressed doubts about the timeline, citing the Ethereum Foundation's history of missed deadlines. Researcher Dankrad Feist suggested that AI tools could help accelerate the upgrades, while crypto analyst Ignas Fiodorovas questioned the lack of improved tokenomics for Ether in the roadmap.
