Colombian Leader Highlights Need for Green Energy in Cryptocurrency Mining

The increasing demand for energy-intensive activities such as cryptocurrency mining is drawing attention from world leaders. Recently, Colombian President Gustavo Petro stressed the importance of using clean energy sources to power these operations. In a statement, he warned that relying on fossil fuels would have severe consequences for the environment, potentially leading to global climate collapse.

Paraguay has become an attractive location for Bitcoin mining due to its hydroelectric resources, offering competitive energy prices ranging from $0.037 to 0.050/kWh. The country holds the fourth largest hashrate in the world, behind major powers like the U.S., Russia, and China. In contrast, Venezuela's 9-year peak energy crisis led to a ban on bitcoin mining, but there are still opportunities for mining near energy generation sources.

Petro also proposed using the Caribbean cities of Santa Marta, Riohacha, and Barranquilla as potential locations for Bitcoin mining. This move could have a significant impact on the region's development, according to the President. However, it remains unclear whether these locations will meet the necessary conditions for the industry to thrive.
