California Court Dismisses Coinbase User's Attempt to Quash IRS Summons
A recent court decision in California has shed light on the complexities of tax law for cryptocurrency users. In a bid to quash an IRS summons, Roger Metz, a Coinbase user, filed a petition with the Northern District of California last year. However, his attempt was met with dismissal by US District Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín.
The court's decision was based on procedural grounds, citing that Metz had failed to notify all required government parties within the 90-day deadline. Federal civil procedure rules require defendants to be formally notified of lawsuits to ensure they receive notice and the opportunity to respond. In this case, Metz had served the US Attorney's Office for the Northern District of California and the IRS, but had neglected to notify the US Attorney General in Washington.
