Riot Data Center Leader Exits Amid Industry Shifts
Riot, a leading bitcoin miner, is facing a leadership change with the departure of its Chief Data Center Officer Jonathan Gibbs. Gibbs was appointed in June 2023 to spearhead the company's expansion beyond Bitcoin mining into hyperscale data center and AI hosting services.
Gibbs' exit comes after less than a year at the helm, and it is unclear what triggered his departure. However, it is revealed that he forfeited 1.1 million restricted shares as part of his exit package.
The company's move to diversify into AI and data center colocation businesses is aimed at offsetting pressure from declining mining economics. This trend is being seen across the industry, with publicly listed bitcoin miners such as Riot turning to alternative revenue streams.
