Curaçao Smashes Record: World's Smallest Nation Qualifies for FIFA World Cup
Curaçao has made history by becoming the smallest country to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, surpassing Iceland's record. With a population of approximately 156,000 and covering an area of 444 km², Curaçao will face Germany in the opening match on June 14, 2026, at NRG Stadium in Houston.
The island nation secured its spot through a 0-0 draw against Jamaica during the Concacaf qualifying rounds. This achievement dethroned Iceland, which had held the record since their impressive run at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Curaçao's population is less than half of Iceland's.
The FIFA World Cup is expanding to 48 teams for the first time, providing a larger stage for crypto-related activities. Major platforms such as Kraken and Chainlink are involved in official or promotional partnerships tied to the tournament. Their focus centers on fan engagement through NFTs and digital collectibles. Avalanche powers FIFA Collect, the governing body's digital collectibles platform.
Avalanche will face a stress test and showcase its capabilities during the World Cup. Kraken's involvement aims to capture attention from sports fans who might be crypto-curious but haven't yet opened an exchange account. Chainlink's participation reinforces its role as a behind-the-scenes protocol that powers the products people interact with.
