Douglas County Puts Data Centers and Crypto Mines on Hold
Douglas County is taking steps to address the growing concern over data centers, cryptocurrency facilities, and battery energy storage complexes. These types of operations have been gaining attention for their significant electricity demands and potential environmental impact.
Unlike some neighboring counties, Douglas County does not have a moratorium in place on these projects. However, it has implemented a 'de facto pause' due to the lack of clear regulations. This means that any applications received will be put on hold until the county's codes are updated.
The development process is complex and time-consuming. Staff members have been working for over 20 months to draft new codes, but no timeline has been established for completion. County officials emphasize that the 'de facto pause' is not a guarantee against future projects, but rather a temporary measure until regulations can be developed.
