Ethereum and Solana Found Vulnerable to Quantum Threats in New Report

A new report from Project Eleven has highlighted the vulnerability of two major blockchain networks to potential quantum threats.

The study found that about 65% of Ethereum's and 100% of Solana's systems are currently vulnerable to quantum attacks, which could be exploited in the future.

Ethereum is particularly at risk due to its use of the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) for user account security and Boneh-Lynn-Shacham (BLS) signatures for proof-of-stake consensus. If a quantum attacker were able to recover validator BLS keys, they could forge attestations and destabilize the network.

Solana's vulnerability is structural in nature, with its Ed25519 design making it easy for attackers to identify wallet public keys directly inside on-chain addresses.

Despite these risks, both networks are actively working on migration plans to mitigate potential threats. The Ethereum Foundation has launched a Post-Quantum Ethereum website and is planning L1 protocol upgrades by 2029, while the Solana Foundation has chosen Falcon as its post-quantum signature scheme and claims to be ready to activate it when needed.
