Middleboro and Lakeville Consider Ban on Cryptocurrency ATMs
Efforts are underway to restrict the use of cryptocurrency ATMs in Middleboro and Lakeville. Law enforcement officials claim that these machines are often used for illicit activities and can charge high fees.
According to authorities, a 73-year-old woman from Lakeville was scammed out of $20,000 after being told her computer was infected with a virus and she needed to withdraw the funds using a Bitcoin ATM. She was instructed not to answer any phone calls, including those from her family.
A joint investigation between Lakeville and Raynham Police discovered the woman's location and prevented the transaction. However, officials say that many other cases of cryptocurrency scams remain undetected.
