Ripple's Schwartz Highlights Crypto Advantages Over Stablecoins
David Schwartz, a prominent figure in the cryptocurrency space as Ripple's CTO Emeritus, recently weighed in on the advantages of cryptocurrencies over stablecoins. In a discussion centered around control risks and global utility, Schwartz highlighted key differences between these asset types.
The first point Schwartz made was that stablecoins are limited by their connection to a single fiat currency, which reduces their effectiveness in applications spanning multiple jurisdictions with different national currencies. This limitation becomes apparent in cross-border payments, trade settlements, and decentralized systems operating across regions.
He also emphasized the control risks tied to stablecoin issuers, noting that a stablecoin can be frozen or clawed back by its issuer. Centralized entities must comply with court orders, which may override user interests, creating structural differences from decentralized cryptocurrencies where control is not tied to a single authority capable of restricting access.
Finally, Schwartz addressed the upside potential and long-term value considerations between asset types, stating that 'for most cryptocurrencies most of the time, the upside is worth more than the downside.' He added that if he had to lock up some money in an escrow for a year, he might well prefer XRP or BTC to USD because he knows USD isn't going up.
