US Government Cracks Down on Non-Consensual Deepfake Imagery with TAKE IT DOWN Act
A new law has been signed into effect in the US to combat non-consensual deepfake imagery. The TAKE IT DOWN Act, also known as S.146, was passed by Congress with bipartisan support and signed into law by President Trump on May 19, 2025.
The bill creates a national framework requiring platforms to remove non-consensual intimate images after receiving a valid takedown notice. This legislation was introduced by Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), with First Lady Melania Trump publicly championing the bill.
The law is seen as part of a broader regulatory posture toward AI-generated content, with Congress taking just four months to go from bill introduction to presidential signature. This speed is notable compared to other crypto-specific legislation that has faced long delays.
