SEC Appoints New Enforcement Chief Amid Cryptocurrency Case Controversy
The SEC has named David Woodcock as its new enforcement chief, effective May 4. Woodcock brings a wealth of experience in securities regulation to the role, having previously served as a partner at Gibson Dunn and Crutcher and leading the firm's Securities Enforcement Practice Group.
His appointment comes amid ongoing controversy surrounding the SEC's handling of cryptocurrency cases. In March, Margaret Ryan stepped down as enforcement chief after reported disagreements with commission leadership over digital asset investigations.
The dispute has raised concerns among lawmakers about potential interference in fraud cases connected to individuals associated with former President Trump. Congressional senators have requested clarification on whether Ryan faced undue influence from SEC officials.
