Crypto Executives Boost Security Amid Rising Kidnapping Threats
The crypto industry is grappling with a rising threat landscape as kidnappings-for-ransom targeting executives surge. According to Jameson Lopp's public repository, at least 316 incidents have been recorded since 2014, with 79 ransom-focused attacks in 2025 and 27 reported so far in 2026.
France has become a focal point for crypto crime, with Paris described as eclipsing other regions by a wide margin. The country's security posture at the recent Paris Blockchain Week reflected a proactive stance, with public officials announcing a prevention platform designed to improve security coordination across agencies and private partners.
The industry is responding with increased personal security spending and bespoke insurance products. Relm Insurance has launched a kidnap-for-ransom (K&R) coverage policy in response to growing demand from crypto clients, while Coinbase spent $6.2 million on executive protection for its CEO in 2024.
