Crypto VCs Broaden Investment Focus Beyond Cryptocurrencies

Crypto venture capital firms are expanding their investment focus beyond cryptocurrencies and blockchain startups. Framework Ventures, Paradigm, Haun Ventures, and YZi Labs have all raised new funds with broader mandates that include frontier technologies like AI, robotics, energy, fintech, and more.

According to investors, the shift is driven by a maturing crypto market, the rapid rise of adjacent technologies, larger funds seeking new opportunities, and growing overlap between blockchain and other industries. Framework Ventures' Rajiv Patel-O'Connor said their expanded focus is a natural extension of their founding strategy, while CoinFund's Jake Brukhman described it as a 'maturation period' for the crypto venture market.

While some firms remain focused on crypto, others have already started to adapt to new investment themes. Hypersphere Ventures' Jack Platts said each technology cycle has its own frontier opportunities, and that AI and other technologies are now compelling investment themes. Framework's Patel-O'Connor highlighted robotics as a promising area for long-term adoption potential, while Haun Ventures' second fund focuses on crypto and blockchain companies, but also firms in financial services, the AI agentic economy, and alternative assets.

Investors were skeptical about whether crypto VCs can compete with established generalist venture firms outside of crypto. However, Framework's Patel-O'Connor argued that their advantage comes from moving quickly, leading rounds, and taking a hands-on approach with portfolio companies.
