Understanding Block Size: The Key to Effective Crypto Transactions
A blockchain's block size is a critical factor in determining its transaction capacity, which in turn affects fees, speed, and node accessibility. In Bitcoin, for instance, the block size limit of around 1 MB means that when demand outpaces this limit, transaction fees spike and wait times increase.
The impact of block size on a blockchain's performance is multifaceted. Larger blocks can hold more transactions per block, reducing congestion and lowering fees, but they also slow down propagation, which increases the risk of orphaned blocks and temporary chain splits. Additionally, bigger blocks require more hardware and bandwidth for full nodes to verify the chain, potentially leading to centralization.
