OP_NET has introduced a novel approach to decentralized finance (DeFi) on the Bitcoin network, leveraging standard Bitcoin transactions and native fees to facilitate DeFi activities. The platform, dubbed 'SlowFi', is designed to bring DeFi applications directly onto Bitcoin's base layer, rather than routing them through sidechains or adjacent networks.
According to OP_NET co-founder Frederic Fosco, also known as Danny Plainview, the platform uses Taproot-based spends for application execution and NativeSwap model for token swaps. This approach eliminates the need for wrapped assets or separate gas tokens, making transactions slower but potentially more cost-effective in the long run.
However, not all users are convinced of the benefits of 'SlowFi'. Some critics argue that this approach dilutes Bitcoin's monetary focus or clogs block space with nonessential transactions. In response, Plainview emphasizes that any fee-paying Taproot transaction should be treated as a legitimate use of block space.
