Iran Collects Crypto Fees from Strait of Hormuz Tankers Amid US Dispute

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Iran and the US may grant Tehran the right to collect fees for maritime services in the Strait of Hormuz, according to a report by Iran's state-run Fars News Agency.

The agency cited a 'knowledgeable source' claiming that the MoU allows Washington to accept Tehran's right to charge fees after an initial 60-day free passage period. However, American officials have stated publicly that the agreement ensures long-term toll-free passage through the strait.

Iran has reportedly begun collecting informal tolls on ships transiting the strait, with charges ranging from $1 per barrel of oil to approximately $2 million per tanker. These tolls are allegedly being collected in Bitcoin (BTC), Tether (USDT), or Chinese yuan.

The MoU also reportedly establishes joint management of the strait by Iran and Oman for regional economic development.
