Ethereum Unveils 'Strawmap' Roadmap for Network Upgrades by 2029

Ethereum has unveiled its 'Strawmap' roadmap, outlining plans for network upgrades through 2029. The proposal aims to transform the platform into a high-performance 'Gigagas' network, capable of handling increased activity.

The plan focuses on reducing latency by gradually cutting slot times from 12 seconds to 2 seconds, while preserving decentralization. To achieve this, Ethereum will upgrade its peer-to-peer system using erasure coding, allowing nodes to receive small data pieces from multiple peers and reducing block transmission time.

Another key goal is improving finality, with a proposed BFT-style algorithm that could cut finality times from 16 minutes to 8-16 seconds. The plan also prepares for future risks by introducing quantum-resistant signatures.

However, Ethereum faces challenges in the market, with conflicting on-chain metrics and price signals. While development activity has picked up, social mood remains volatile, suggesting confidence is fragile. Additionally, Solana has surpassed Ethereum's DeFi volume, putting pressure on Ethereum's position as a leader.
