Vitalik Buterin Unveils 'Lean Ethereum' Roadmap to Tackle Gas Costs and Quantum Era Cryptography

Ethereum's next major evolutionary phase is taking shape as Vitalik Buterin unveiled a multi-year roadmap to tackle gas costs, quantum-era cryptography, and state growth. Dubbed 'Lean Ethereum', the plan aims to bundle several deep architectural changes into one sequential push over the next three to four years.

One of the most significant pieces of the Lean roadmap is making recursive STARKs a native verification mechanism within Ethereum. This could reduce verification costs and improve L2 composability by allowing a single proof to verify many others.

The plan also involves swapping remaining quantum-vulnerable cryptography for post-quantum alternatives, which addresses a structural risk that could expose billions in user funds if a fault-tolerant quantum computer emerges sooner than expected.
