DOJ Drops Charges Against Alleged Mastermind of $722M Crypto Ponzi Scheme
Matthew Goettsche is a Colorado resident who became one of the principal figures behind BitClub Network, a Bitcoin mining pool operation that promised high returns to investors. The company operated from April 2014 to December 2019 and allegedly bilked investors out of over $722 million.
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) initially charged Goettsche with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to sell unregistered securities, and other crimes related to the BitClub Network scheme. However, in July 2026, the DOJ dropped all charges against him, dismissing the case with prejudice.
The decision was seen as part of a broader shift in DOJ crypto enforcement policy during the Trump administration, focusing on direct criminal conduct rather than regulatory violations through criminal law.
