Coinbase Expands Beyond Crypto Trading with Stock Transfers and Options

Coinbase has announced significant expansions to its platform beyond cryptocurrency trading, aiming to become the 'everything exchange' where users can trade, spend, borrow, and invest in a single account.

The company now allows US users to transfer existing stock portfolios from other brokerages onto Coinbase without having to sell their holdings first. This is made possible through the Automated Customer Account Transfer Service (ACATS), which directly moves securities and cash between brokerages.

Coinbase has also introduced options, futures, and pre-IPO contracts for both cryptocurrencies and stocks. Perpetual futures tied to thematic equity baskets covering AI, defense, and Chinese equities are in the pipeline. Pre-IPO perpetual futures will give traders exposure to private companies ahead of their public listings.

The company has also launched Coinbase Advisor, a SEC-registered AI-powered investment advisory tool that delivers portfolio recommendations, tax-loss harvesting guidance, and market analysis. This service is initially available to Coinbase One subscribers in the US.
