Bitcoin's Survival Chances in a Global Power Outage
Bitcoin's ability to withstand a global catastrophe has been debated by experts and enthusiasts alike. A recent discussion on Bitget highlighted the possibility of a 10-year power outage and its potential effects on the network.
The Bitcoin protocol is designed to be decentralized, with nodes scattered across the globe storing copies of the ledger. This allows the network to be restarted even if most computers fail, as long as at least one node remains operational.
Daniel Batten, a Bitcoin environmental impact analyst, suggests that off-grid energy sources could keep the network running, even in the absence of a functioning grid. However, this would require sufficient supplies of renewable energy and maintenance personnel to keep the nodes online.
While the blockchain can remain synced globally, there are concerns about the internet's ability to function without power. The use of satellite kits and low-tech communication methods could potentially allow for transactions to be made even in a post-apocalyptic scenario.
