Cryptocurrency Used to Finance Cheap Combat Drones in Global Conflicts

A recent report by blockchain analysis company Chainalysis has shed light on a concerning trend: groups linked to Russia and Iran are using cryptocurrencies to finance the purchase of cheap combat drones and their components.

According to the report, these transactions have been traced through blockchain analysis, revealing a network of suppliers and buyers that would otherwise remain hidden. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, pro-Russian groups have raised over $8.3 million in crypto donations, with drones among the purchases specifically listed.

The use of cryptocurrencies in military purchasing is not new, but this report highlights its increasing prevalence. Blockchain researchers at Chainalysis were able to track the flow of cryptocurrency from individual wallets associated with drone developers or paramilitary groups to the purchase of cheap drones and their components from suppliers on e-commerce sites.

Chainalysis matched cryptocurrency transactions between $2,200 and $3,500 with the exact prices of drones and drone components on e-commerce platforms. This allows investigators to map the path of a transaction from its origin to its destination, providing valuable insights into the intentions behind these purchases.
