Canada Considers Ban on Cryptocurrency ATMs Amid Rising Fraud Cases
The Canadian government is weighing the introduction of stricter regulations or even a ban on cryptocurrency ATMs in response to a surge in fraud cases.
These machines, which allow users to convert cash into digital assets via QR code wallets, have been targeted by scammers who trick victims into making irreversible deposits. Recent reports indicate that elderly individuals are often the targets of these scams, with perpetrators instructing them to send money through cryptocurrency ATMs using their personal savings, including retirement funds.
Despite having nearly 400 locations across the country, Canada currently lacks specific regulations for this type of operation. Cryptocurrency ATMs are treated similarly to traditional financial services such as international transfers and currency exchange.
