Bitcoin Seed Phrase Failures Reveal Hidden Threat to Crypto Security
A report by bcTanji suggests that 20% of Bitcoin's supply is inaccessible due to seed phrase failures. This is according to Chainalysis data cited in the report, which also notes that 35% of crypto holders have lost access to their wallets at least once, and 31% of those were never able to recover their funds.
The report highlights the need for a more secure and user-friendly way to manage digital wallets. It proposes using WebAuthn, a protocol standardized by the W3C, which relies on asymmetric cryptography to verify users without sharing passwords. This approach is said to be inherently resistant to phishing attacks.
The report notes that there are technical hurdles to integrating passkeys directly into Bitcoin wallets, as WebAuthn relies on the NIST P-256 elliptic curve, whereas the Bitcoin blockchain uses a different curve, secp256k1. However, it outlines four architectural models developers can use to bridge this gap.
