Artist Captures Bitcoin's Essence in Intricate Oil Painting

Artist Anik Malcolm has been working on an ambitious project to represent the entire supply of bitcoin – 21 million – as individual beads on a cube. The oil painting, titled 'The Whole Entire Universe', is a meticulous representation of the number that requires careful calculation and attention to detail.

The idea for the piece was sparked by Malcolm's desire to make the abstract concept of 21 million tangible. He sought collaboration with his wife, Una, who suggested using a cube of beads as a way to represent the number. This led to a series of mathematical coincidences that Malcolm describes as 'divine providence'. The pattern of squares within the cube mirrors Bitcoin's halving mechanism, creating a structurally resonant representation of the cryptocurrency.

Malcolm spent over 900 hours painting each bead by hand, with the entire process becoming meditative and transformative for him. He notes that the experience was not just about representing Bitcoin but also about understanding its essence and significance. The piece has drawn attention from Adam Back and will be showcased at Bitcoin 2026 in Las Vegas.
