USDT Used in $470M Money Laundering Operation Receives Scant Justice
A recent court decision has shed light on a sophisticated money laundering operation that utilized the cryptocurrency Tether (USDT) to transfer approximately $470 million in drug proceeds through shell companies and traditional banks.
The defendant, Maximilien de Hoop Cartier, claimed to be a member of the famous Cartier jewelry dynasty, but federal prosecutors referred to him as a 'purported' family member, indicating that they did not confirm his lineage. The operation involved converting cryptocurrency into fiat currency through USDT transactions, which made it difficult to track the origin of the funds.
The forfeiture order required Cartier to surrender $2.36 million, which is only 0.5% of the total laundered amount. This highlights the operational structure of money laundering networks, where the launders earn a commission for their services, leaving the principal amounts with the criminal networks.
