UK Introduces New Donation Rules to Prevent Foreign Financial Interference
The UK government has introduced new donation rules aimed at preventing foreign financial interference in its political system. The measures include an annual cap of £100,000 on donations from British citizens living abroad and a moratorium on crypto donations until regulatory progress is made.
These changes may significantly impact insurgent parties like Reform UK, which relies heavily on major donations to operate at a national scale. Christopher Harborne, a Tether-linked billionaire who has donated over £24 million to the party since 2019, would see his permissible donations reduced by more than 99% under the new rules.
The government's response is in line with recommendations from the Rycroft Review, an independent inquiry that highlighted the complexity of tracing overseas funds and the opacity of cryptocurrency ownership as significant vulnerabilities in the existing framework. The UK faces a persistent problem of foreign financial interference in its political system, and these measures aim to address it.
